I'm so sorry to hear about Little Stevie's illness. Our dog, Baxter, had lymphoma, and the decisions to make are hard to bear, so my heart is with you. Your post reminded me of Zack, the scared puppy that our family adopted when the kids were young. He had been found as a stray, so nobody at the shelter knew what his early life had been like. For the first few days in our home he hid under the dining room table. Our then six year old son would lie on the floor beside the table and just talk softly to him. After about three days, Zack began moving closer and closer to him until he finally came out and licked his face and joined our family, where he lived for 15 years. Love made.
Love made, indeed. Animals make so much love possible. The image of your son getting right down on the floor beside that sweet, frightened puppy and quietly, gently talking to him helped to bring me comfort today. Thank you.
Sylvia, I am so sorry to hear about Little Stevie’s health worries. I don’t envy you all for the hard decisions you may have to face. Your post is beautiful and made me think of Rachel and the toddler she is caring for who is so troubled due to trauma, and yet, she finds joy and by having been given love and stability SHE dares to love and trust.
I wish comfort to Little Stevie and most of all I wish a cure is possible.
Thank you so much, Stephanie. Yes, Rachel's little foster child is a perfect example of love, made. We never know what the magic will be or if the magic will work, but we do always need to try. Rachel is an inspiration to us all.
I will have more information about LS on Tuesday. I don't think a cure is possible, but remission for a while might be. I suspect it is only a slim chance, but I will see what the doc says. She will have a more detailed report by then.
I'm so sorry to hear that Little Stevie could be reaching the end of his journey. As someone who has been owned by cats and dogs over the decades, I can sympathize and empathize with all of you. And I agree with the vets - animals are far preferable to humans on many levels. Being alone these days, I don't know what I'd do without my current feline best buddy. Having another heartbeat in the house makes HUGE difference to life. But I hope Little Steve is just "going through a phase" and will surprise everyone. They are so precious.
Thank you, Dorrie. We will know more on Tuesday, but best guess is that we are not headed in a good direction. I know what you mean when you talk about "having another heartbeat in the house," and I already have Big Stevie's heartbeat here and our roommate's heartbeat, too (he is here roughly half the week). It's not as though I am without companionship. It's that Little Stevie is precious in his own way, as you can appreciate. He's also really amazing, considering what he has been through in life. He has a lot to teach us.
I adore Little Stevie and am so sad about his health woes! He is a most remarkable cat and has brought a lot of love and delight to those who have met him. I am so sorry that your family is going through this sad and worrisome business. I, too, had a cat that later tests showed had been shot by a BB gun. I remember the shock and the gut wrenching sorrow that he had been treated this way. It defies understanding. And yet Simon, too, had a loving and friendly personality despite that trauma. Please know I am holding your family in my heart, sending lots of love and comfort to you all and Little Stevie.💕💕💕
I’m so sorry about Little Stevie. I hope he’s just dieting and resting before the blooms of Spring but that seems wishful thinking. Your post reminds me of one of the Beatles’ songs. The Beatles said The love you take is equal to the love you make.
I wish you good luck and courage today. You and your family always bring love into every space. Thank you.
Thank you, Carol. I like your version of wishful thinking. Probably the dire scenario is where we are headed, but it's nice to think your vision could be possible. Thank you.
Oh Sylvia, your post left me weeping. For Little Stevie, you, Steve, and all the sadness and trauma in the world, writ large and small. I am wholly owned by two cats (currently), and have been owned equally by others in the past. My heart hurts for so many things right now, but reading about Little Stevie really got the waterworks going. Human beings have so much to learn, and the animals who trust us completely have so much to teach. Wishing you courage for the decisions, and sending you love today, and for the days ahead. Thank you.

Thank you so much, Irene. It's all so hard to believe. All of it. The love and comfort help a lot. Thank you.

Thank you so much, Kathy. Courage is much needed ... and love, too. I appreciate it. Thank you.
